Historic Palmyra, New York
Did
you know Winston Churchill's grandparents come from Palmyra,
New York? How about Ira Lackey, the whaler and owner of the
"Morning Star," the first boat to send missionaries
from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the
South Pacific? Or even Pliny Sexton, a famous abolitionist?
Find all this out and more in the Historic Palmyra Museum.
Formerly a store, boarding house, and private residence,
the Historic Palmyra Museum now holds the secret past of Palmyra
including the founders of the town and the populace who lived
here. The Palmyra Museum includes an exhibit dedicated to
Joseph Smith, showing actual business documents signed by
him, Hyrum, and Lemuel Durfee, who hired the Smith brothers
on his farm. Another exhibit features a "war room"
showing community members involved in every war the U.S. participated
in, starting from the Revolutionary war to the Vietnam War.
You can visit the Palmyra Museum for an admission price of
$3. The other museums in the city, the William Phelps House
Museum and the Coverlet Museum, cost the same. If you want
to visit all of the museums you can, for the price of $5.
